ERPNext or Odoo in Guatemala: license, price, FEL and when to choose each
ERPNext and Odoo are two widely used ERPs covering inventory, sales, purchasing, accounting and more. They differ in license, how they are charged and how they are implemented. This guide compares what can be verified in official sources and proposes questions to decide using your own data. Avanza Code implements ERPNext; we say so you can read the comparison with that context.
By the Avanza Code team
1. Software license and ownership
ERPNext is published under the GPL-3.0 license. Odoo has two editions: Community, under LGPL v3, and Enterprise, under a proprietary license that requires a valid subscription to use or modify the software.
- ERPNext: a single open-source codebase, with no separate paid edition.
- Odoo Community: open source, with fewer features than Enterprise.
- Odoo Enterprise: use subject to subscription; copies may not be distributed or resold.
- Key question: what happens to your operation if you stop paying or change provider?
2. How each is charged
Odoo publishes its Standard and Custom plans with a per-user monthly price. Plans include support, hosting and maintenance, but not implementation or maintenance of custom code, and the published price applies a first-year discount to initial users. Avanza Code’s ERPNext plans are defined by branches and monthly operations, and are published on the ERPNext page.
- Per user: cost grows with each person who has access.
- Per branches and operations: cost grows with the size of the operation.
- In both cases, add implementation, support and customization to the monthly cost.
- Always compare with the same number of users and branches, with and without VAT, in writing.
3. FEL electronic invoicing in Guatemala
Odoo’s documentation states that the Guatemala localization includes chart of accounts and taxes (l10n_gt), and that electronic invoicing (l10n_gt_edi) is installed separately and requires an account with the Infile certifier. In ERPNext with Avanza Code, the FEL integration is configured with your certifier and enrollment is paid directly to it.
- Confirm which certifier you use today and whether the solution supports it.
- Ask to issue a test invoice before subscribing.
- Verify cancellations, credit notes and special invoices you use.
- Validate the tax setup with your accountant before invoicing.
4. Customization and integrations
Both allow adapting the system. In Odoo, some tools, such as Studio and the external API, are included in the Custom plan. In ERPNext, open source allows modification without an additional license. In both, maintaining customizations is a cost to agree on.
- List customizations you need today and in a year.
- Ask who maintains customizations when new versions arrive.
- Confirm the API available to connect your CRM, online store or bank.
- Separate what is configuration from what is development.
5. When to choose each
There is no single answer. Decide with these criteria and a test on your own process.
- Choose ERPNext if you value open source with no paid edition, a plan by branches and operations, and local FEL support.
- Consider Odoo if you already work with a trusted Odoo partner or need a specific application you have already validated there.
- If your process is very particular, evaluate custom development on top of either one.
- In both cases, request a demo with your items, customers and a test FEL invoice.
